do you think girls should learn to cook?

Carli Watterson: I have been a vegetarian for 4 years, but because so much is on the news about fish oi,l and my kids suffer from short term memory issues we decided to try some fish in our diets once a week. I would love to hear some recipes. We just had salmon on the grill with hickory chips, and it was so yummy. If you want the amazing recipe it is free at American Test Kitchen.

Veta Slicker: Potato and Cheese Pierogidough (approximate 75 pierogi which serves about 6 people)700 ml (3 cups) regular flour1 whole egg1 egg yolk (I used the egg white in the potatoes and cheese filling later)1 tea spoon salt175 ml (¾ cup) warm water (heated up, not directly from the tap)Mix the flour and the salt together with the eggs. Heat up some water and mix small parts at a time into the flour mixture. I did it by hand but I think it works perfectly well to use a food processor. On a flat surface knead the dough until it’s firm and soft. Cover with a damp tablecloth and let it! rest on the counter top while you are making the fillings.cheese and potatoe filling4 â€" 5 boiled potatoes4 table spoons butter or olive oil50 ml (0.2 cup) milk1 egg whiteabout 120 ml (½ cup) farmers’ cheesesalt and peppercilantrotoppingmelted butterfine chopped and fried baconfine chopped and fried onionsMash the potatoes with the egg white, some melted butter and milk. Add the farmers cheese as noted or to your own taste. Mix well and season with salt and pepper. Lastly add chopped cilantro. Note that cilantro is not really a traditional ingredient for a pierogi filling but I don’t think there are any strong rules on how to make fillings. You take what you have at home. I used a very mild type of cilantro. However many recipes seem to use fine chopped onions or chives. I will try garlic next time.filling the pierogiUncover the dough and if necessary knead it some more. Divide into 4 pieces. Use lots and lots of flour while rolling one piece at the time to a 1/16”! (1 mm) thickness. Make 3” circles and divide the fillings o! n top. Cover the filling and pinch the edges firmly to seal. Pat some more flower on every pirogi so they don’t stick together. If necessary add some more warm water to the dough as the flour makes it dryer in the process. Repeat until you have about 75 lovely pierogi.Heat up salted water. When the water is boiling drop some of the pierogi in the water. When they are floating up to the surface let them boil approximate 1 minute more. Fish them out with a strainer. Top with melted butter and fried bacon and onions (chopped finely). Serve with a salad and some sour cream.Well it is a long process… but luckily it was worth every minute. The pierogi ended up super thin and didn’t last very long. There are many different versions on how to make pierogi. Some use sour cream and some use the egg yolk in their dough....Show more

Abel Adger: I know.. cheese is expensive. However flour and potatoes are not. I am having company my brother and three kids. Four adults and th! ree teens. I know.. I can eat a bunch of Pirogi.I need a recipe that is delicious and can satiate the hungry on a shoe string budget .. I thought this would be a great recipe. I would like to ideal make 50 Pirogis. Not sure how much shredded cheese packs I would use/need? Thanks...Show more

Oda Mauson: :) what a complicated question, but I will try to give you a few tips to start with:1) I suggest you start with cooking, and leave the baking for latter when you are more confident. 2) Start with simple dishes that have few ingredients. Soups are very easy to make. Or simple baked things in the oven, like chicken with vegetables, potatoes. 3) Pick easy recipes with very clear directions and follow everything accordingly step by step.4) Guard your food, watch the temperature, stir around. In the beginning patience and attention makes all the difference. 5) Taste while you cook, and season according to taste (salt, pepper, etc) 6) Be easy on the salt! It is easy to! add more salt toward the end, but if you over salt the food, there is ! no going back.7) Having the right tools makes cooking easier and more efficient. I will give you a list of tools that are must for proper cooking:- A good teflon frying pan. (Important: never use metal tools inside and only wash with gentle sponge) This way the pan can last you years!- Use only silicone coated stirring equipment. They will never burn, or stick or scratch your teflon.- Have a few different size plastic bowls. They will come very handy. - Have one swifting tool, that may come handy when washing rice, or draining pasta, or for swifting flour for baking.- Have heat resistant gloves. - Cutting boards, and at least one good all purpose kitchen knife As you will find out, there are endless rules to cooking, endless ways to make things. Try to experiment with your own recipes just for fun. Don't take cooking seriously. You will learn from mistakes. :)

Karie Mavle: try this one, I have no idea what the size is on the pirogies she makes, but they do sound good.! and about one large baker is 2 pounds.http://www.food.com/recipe/periyukas-lithuanian-pi...

Pam Rampadarat: My sister does not like to cook at all. She subsists on take out, frozen meals, fast food, steak house food, etc.... A bit costly, I'm certain, but she does not like to cook. To each his own. I think that men as well as women should know how to cook, but if you really don't like to do it......... well? We're all different.

Tricia Dossous: I was like that up until a few months ago, you should start by making stuff like homemade cheese sauce, it's simple and you only need a few ingredients in a pan.butter, flour, cheese, salt & pepper.

Raul Lushbaugh: good choice of fish! you want oily fish as they are higher in omega-3.salmon,herring,mackeral etc..in my rstaurant i usually just season well and pan sear, skin side down first,if its thicker i will flip and into the oven, most of the time i leave skin down and finish in the oven.nice and crispy.thi! s time of year, try forked fingerling or yukon gold potatoes with your f! ish, heavier sauce is always nice,i like bearnaise..there are hundreds of sauces to choose from,i like nantua,i use bechemel for this one,i kick it with chives and crayfish tails.depending on wich part of the world your in ,langoustines will work too.try something tomatoe based, garlic, onions, fresh herbs and tomatoes, make a salsa for your fish or cook it down into a sauce.the possabilities are as limited as your imagination..bon apatite....Show more

Randolph Lozoya: I think they should if they intend to have children, just so they can provide for the kids and if they get to a stage in their lives when they need to.There will be others like you who don't like to cook, but I woulld suggest you learn a few basics, and then cath a fella who loves cooking and marry him LoL

Olen Penhallurick: Everyone should learn the basics, so that they at least have the option of cooking. It's nice that your mom wants to teach you, so many people don't bother anymore and then when t! heir kids grow up and have kids of their own, they eat frozen dinners or sandwiches for every meal. It's kind of sad to see...they come over to play with my kids and they're just amazed to see that you can really make stuff that you don't just heat up and eat.I learned to cook and my sisters didn't. Now that they're grown, they both regret it. They eat in restaurants often, and one of my sisters gets food poisoning at least twice a year, which really doesn't happen at home as long as you follow basic food safety rules. Her husband is always happy when I invite them over for dinner because he knows it means a good meal.I'm already teaching my 7 year old how to cook. She can make tortillas and rice already, plus follow simple recipes on her own. She also makes cakes....Show more

Ronnie Barcus: Girls or boys: If you don't like to cook, don't do it. You will never be any good at it if you hate doing it. And nobody will want to eat your cooking if it's never any go! od. Just eat in restaurants, leave the cooking to people who like to d! o it, and are good at it.

Fritz Hawkey: I'm horrible at cooking. I use the microwave for almost every meal of the day. I want to start being better in the kitchen so can anyone tell me the basic cooking rules that everyone knows or should know when cooking/baking etc. Thanks!

Shena Etulain: Try going to foodnetwork.com

Alberto Kozub: (Actually, quite good food can be cooked in a microwave oven as long as no browning is needed, but I suspect you mean that you use your microwave only for *reheating* things, like frozen packaged dinners for example, right?)There is a load of info about how to "learn to cook," and cook well, in my answers to previous questions here, including links to videos, techniques, good sites and "teachers," etc. I think there are links to most of my answers in this one particular answer and the links it has to others:http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=201106... (answer 5 if not voted on yet)Perhaps you could start with this on! e though:http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Asf6F...And btw, the "basic cooking rules" are almost never completely learned by many people, but it's fun to spend a lifetime learning more and more. Most people simply "learn to cook this" or "learn to cook that," and just keep making those recipes forever. Some people become more interested in the underlying principles instead of specific recipes though, and can then just create dishes using various meats/veggies/etc that look good or are able to substitute one "kind of thing" for another in a similar kind of dish. They may also learn which kinds of herb/spice/flavor combinations tend to work well, or that turn a dish into an "Asian" dish or "Middle Eastern" dish or Italian/French/etc/etc dish.http://www.learninghowtocook.com/recipes/25-Techni...http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=201104...When people say "baking," they usually mean cakes, cookies, pastries, breads, quick breads, etc, and I don't cook many ! of those things since I concentrate on "healthy" stuff (I do make quick! breads though), but "baking" technically also means just anything that's cooked in a regular oven *uncovered*. So if you mean the pastry kind of baking, check out some of these links:http://www.google.com/search?q=recipes+learn+to+ba...http://www.google.com/search?q=recipes+quick+bread...If you mean baking "roasts" or whole chickens, or "roasting" vegetables (a great thing to do as a beginner btw), check out some of these:http://www.google.com/search?q=roasting+bakinghttp://www.google.com/search?q=recipes+roasted+veg...If you also want info on good utensils and equipment to start with, pantry staples to have around, etc, you might want to check out my answers here too:beginner kitchen and much-much more:http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=201106...safety of non-stick coatings:http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=201012...HTH

Randa Hessell: is there anybody like me who don't like cooking either

Hyman Coren: Everyone should learn to cook the basic! s. You don't have to like it, and if you end up with someone who prefers to do it, so be it. But at least you'll know how. Eating out is expensive and not very healthy especially at the lower price range.

Billie Bratchett: My sis is like you. She can't cook, nor does she have the desire to learn. I think everyone should have some basic cooking skills, man or woman.

Veta Slicker: yes yes yes! not just 4 a man in ur life but 4 ur self cuz if ur lyk living alone you should learn how to make healthy and satisfying meals 4 urself.

Anton Waln: You should purchase a full size Betty Crocker Cookbook. This cookbook has lots of information that you will need. For instance, it will give you information about different cuts of meat and how to know what cut to buy, how much to have per person, how to season it, just about everything you would need to know. The Betty Crocker Cookbook has so much information in addition to recipes, it is really more than a! cookbook Good luck to you.

Michal Semple: You are not a "horri! ble" cook, you just haven't had enough practice yet. It will get easier as you get more experience.Basic rules for learning how to cook:1. Try to get someone with more experience to help you learn.2. Don't feel bad about making mistakes. Everyone makes them.3. Cook something you like.4. Enjoy!...Show more

Nadia Crauswell: I have a lot of cook it quick cookbooks with a lot of easy and delicious recipes. Go to the bookstore and find some. You will do just fine.

Tom Romer: Everyone should learn to make a least a few descent meals, not just girls. There is no need for you to spend hours a day in the kitchen but if there are things that you like to eat at some point you may want to make them, and you may find that you enjoy making things that you enjoy eating. Maybe you should try baking, then you get to eat the dough or batter along the way so its more fun....Show more

Porfirio Gartland: I think everyone should learn to cook....moms, dads, girls, kids, gr! annies, gays, Rabbis, teachers and vegans....everybody because its a hard world and you not have to depend on anyone.

Dominic Sciancalepore: I think EVERYONE should learn how to cook. At least the basics, ie how to boil water, cook something without burning it (ie temperature regulation/patience) and the concept that making everything the same size makes it done all at the same time all while its evenly cooked. Knowing which spices go with which food items help too, such as sage is good with chicken, dill or rosemary on root veggies, mint with lamb, dill and lemon on fish etc.In the long run, it'll save you tons of money since prepping your own food is always cheaper if you follow a budget and a plan (ie, roast chicken on sunday, chicken enchiladas on monday, enchilada sauce over whatnot on tues)While yes, I love to cook, and especially bake, I grew up with a brother and sister that hated it. But I really think it was more because they didn't have the patience to sit ! in the kitchen while their friends were outside or their favorite tv sh! ow was on.And remember....cooking, unlike baking, is an art. You don't need measuring cups or spoons. You taste and add things a little at a time. Who knows, an hour in the kitchen alone and you could create the next family favorite....Show more

Alisa Kaleiwahea: Yeah, I think everyone should. Dudes too. Anyone who is going to be a parent should know how, or have a spouse who does. Husband or wife, doesn't matter. I like cooking. Everyone loves the person who made the food! Haha say what you want about it, but I cook for guys all the time. I have a lot of guy friends. That's just me though. No one should have to. It's just one of those things that boys love and probably always will, as sexist as some may see it. I don't think it's a big deal at all, really. Also, it's a basic life skill. It's another one of those things that no one has to do anymore, so they don't. It's kind of lame. There's nothing like doin it yourself, your own way. It adds flavor to your life....Sh! ow more

Alexander Villas: I really believe that both guys and gals should learn to cook. Best to you.
