Danica Timperman: Use evergreens, pine cones, holly leaves, berries etc. If you have some gold or silver paint, they will really sparkle, and you can glue some glitter on the edges as well. Oranges and apples piled in a pretty dish with a few twigs of pine or cedar are really pretty. You can also pile old ornaments into a bowl and it looks really festive.Make paper chains from colored construction paper. Draw your own design on leftover boxes or thick paper and color or glitter. Add a string as a hanger. String popcorn for garland. Make stars from tin foil. (Aluminum foil to you youngsters!) Learn to fold plain white paper and cut designs to make snowflakes. You can cut, bake and decorate gingerbread people from real cookie dough, or you can cut the shapes from brown construction paper, or even a paper bag or piece of sandpaper.When I was a kid, we did all these things and more without spending much, and mostly just using things we had at hand.
