Are fashion designers rich?

Arnette Dominici: If you work hard, you can be very rich, fashion is a business, you have to be a savvy entrepreneur to succeed. Fashion is a billion dollar business, it s a jungle, may the best & the smartest win.

Andre Winegar: Fashion designers are rarely rich. Unless you are able to launch your own successful label (you will need considerable financial backing for that). My advice from personal experience (I am a designer) is don't get into the fashion industry. As a rule of thumb, you should start off working for a design company first to learn the ropes, the ins and outs of the industry, the production process and gain contacts (without which, it doesn't matter how good you are, you won't get anywhere).Unless you are prepared to work extremely long hours for low pay (often going for years without a payrise) and being told you are never good enough. You have to have a very thick skin, and be able to survive on little sleep. It usually helps if you come from mone! y as you will be expected to always be dressed in the latest looks and in quality brands (preferably designer labels). You will not make a decent wage working for a company until you have done the hard slog for at least 10-15 years. On the upside, I have lost weight since I live off noodles and have given up socialising and drinks with friends. The other side that may weigh on your conscience is the terrible pay and living conditions the garment workers in the factories have to endure. Being told you have to get production costs down so that the owners of the business can drive fancy cars and send their kids to prestigious schools, ultimately means that you have to rip-off hard working people who are trying to make a living. Take it from me, the fashion industry sucks. Sorry for being negative but the fashion industry is almost certainly not the best industry to get into if you're looking to be financially stable....Show more

Kara Tabian: Any career that is "artsy" is ! a terrible choice finance-wise. Mostly because there is a ***! * ton of competition and, as everyone knows, art is subjective so one minute you could be on top of the world and the next you would be yesterday's news. If you truly love fashion, what I suggest you do is get a "normal", financially stable career first (accountant is pretty good since people tend not to trust machines with their taxes, or an actuary for an insurance company, paralegal, electrician, etc.)Next, save up money from your normal job, all the while keeping your fashion skills sharp by sketching or going to fashion shows in your free time. Save up about 1 year worth of rent for an apartment plus a years worth of food+gas expenses and let's not forget a lump of money set aside to cover your insurance's deductible just in case you get horribly injured. If you have that, then you can quit your "normal" job and spend an entire year completely dedicated to getting your fashion designer career off the ground without worrying about wether or not you will get a client or! der to pay your bills. If you are willing to be patient and save up, and then willing to put in 100% percent then MAYBE you might become a successful fashion designer like you always planned.Even if you fail, at least you will have given it your best shot and you will still have your regular job skills to fall back on. Not many people can say that they truly gave it their all trying to achieve their dream, but you would be one of those few people and you will be able to live without regrets.Good luck for reals...Show more

Mercedez Trabue: There are very few successful fashion designers in the world, and it's cut-throat. If you want a stable income, do something you can do in any town in the country -- like be a dentist or an attorney or a plumber -- and you'll be able to provide well for yourself and your family. Then pursue your fashion designing in your spare time. If you become successful, great. If you don't, you'll still be okay.

Daren Ventrice: As they! say on Project Runway, "One day you're in, and the next day you're out! .". If you want stability, design uniforms, not fashion. Here are the current ads from Apparel News: http://classifieds.apparelnews.net/california/jobs...

Ezekiel Kadner: Yes, a handful of designers are extraordinarily rich, like Giorgio Armani and his line of clothing, accessories, prescription eye wear, fragrances, decor and chocolate. Since it happens some fashion designers are rich, learn what you can from their example. As in all fields, an effort is only as good as its team, so hook up with other professionals with the talent and drive to be successful as you want to be. Search for those who cut patterns, those who know what makes a good show, those into fashion history, etc. Pay attention to trends getting ground on the streets, like New York Times fashion photographer Bill Cunningham does (he has a documentary). Being rich is ambitious. A team will help get you there....Show more

Terrell Voltz: Look at the jobs that fashion designers do or did when then ! starting. I think that for every one making enough money to be considered "rich" there are dozens of peon level workers that work out details or sketch changed sizes for the firms owned by designers, manufacturers, retailers, etc.
